WalkWorks Active Transportation Grant

The Pennsylvania Department of Health is accepting applications for the 2026-2027 WalkWorks Active Transportation Planning Program grants, totaling $345,000, for communities to develop plans to increase physical activity by connecting local destinations with improved pedestrian, bicycle, and transit networks.

Creating activity-friendly spaces increases opportunities for physical activity that can help reduce chronic disease, thereby improving individual health, expanding economic vitality, and relieving traffic congestion and environmental pollution. This approach aligns with the WalkWorks

motto of “mobility options for all.”

Any Pennsylvania municipality can apply for funding to create a plan for more pedestrian-, bicycle-, ADA accessibility-, and public transportation-friendly spaces for residents. Eligible applicants also include Metropolitan and Rural Planning Organizations (MPOs/RPOs), and other governmental entities, such as counties, with the capacity to complete the proposed project and adopt the resulting plans.

Applications must be received by 5:00 PM on March 20, 2026.

2026 AARP Community Challenge Grant

The AARP Community Challenge Grant has awarded 2,100 grants totaling $24.3 million to projects that benefit residents — especially those age 50 and older — and accelerate community change.

AARP is accepting applications that:

• Deliver tangible improvements to communities, such as new crosswalks, benches, bike lanes, housing designs, and public space enhancements.
• Leverage additional support from public, private, and philanthropic sources
• Help communities overcome policy barriers and implement lasting change
• Foster new collaborations and increase community engagement

The program is open to:

• 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and 501(c)(6) nonprofit organizations recognized by the IRS
• Government entities
• Other types of organizations considered on a case-by-case basis

Note: AARP does not fund for-profit companies or individuals.

Mission Focus: Projects must align with AARP’s mission to serve people age 50 and older.
