Chronic Disease Prevention – 412.247.7816

 

Our programs promote awareness and prevention of major chronic diseases: cancer, heart disease, respiratory disease and diabetes. We focus on the three most important healthy behaviors to combat them: healthy eating, physical activity and tobacco cessation.

Traveling overseas? Have you gotten your shots? Have you been bitten by an animal? Do you have one of over 70 reportable diseases? Infectious disease staff provide vaccinations for adults and children, and track and investigate disease outbreaks.

Sexually Transmitted Infections (HIV/AIDS) – 412.578.8081

 

This clinic provides confidential, free testing and clinical services for sexually transmitted infections including syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, Hepatitis B and HIV/AIDS. Counseling is provided before and after HIV tests.

Pediatric Dentistry – 412.578.8378

 

Our dental clinics in the Hill District, McKeesport and Mt. Oliver provide preventative and corrective treatment for children, including: examinations, cleanings, fluoride treatments, fillings, and sealants.

Family & Child Health – 412.247.7950

 

The Maternal & Child Health programs support a healthy start in life for babies in our county and their moms. We provide home-based nursing services to at-risk pregnant women, new moms and families. We also promote healthy breastfeeding. The Home Visiting Network coordinates resources among the Allegheny County Health Department, Healthy Start Inc., and home visiting agencies from around the County.

WIC is a federally funded public health nutrition program under the USDA providing nutrition education, nutritious foods, breastfeeding support, and healthcare referrals for medically at-risk, income-eligible women who are pregnant or post-partum, infants, and children up to age 5. There are 9 WIC clinic locations in Allegheny County.

Engineers and other scientists on this team monitor and analyze the county’s air quality. The enforcement team works with sources of pollution to improve it.

Food Safety – 412.578.8044

 

Permits new food-related businesses, conducts inspections of existing food businesses, responds to consumer complaints about food safety and certifies Food Protection Managers.

Housing & Community Environment – 412.350.4046

 

Investigates citizen housing and community environment complaints; investigates cases of childhood lead poisoning; monitors and treats mosquito-breeding sites; inspects and regulates public swimming pools, schools, nursing homes, rooming houses, and boarding homes.

Permits new or modified residential and commercial plumbing installations to assure compliance with the plumbing code; requires and issues licenses to all plumbers in the county.

Works with municipal recycling programs and promotes special events for hard-to-recycle items.

Inspection and oversight of operating and closed landfills, waste processing facilities, material recovery facilities, and leaf/yard composting sites.

Inspection and oversight of all sewage treatment plants and sewage collection and conveyance systems in Allegheny County.

Pulmonary Center/TB Clinic – 412.578.8162

 

The Health Department’s Pulmonary Center provides tuberculosis screening (Mantoux tuberculin skin testing), evaluation, directly observed therapy (DOT) and treatment for tuberculosis patients.

Emergency Preparedness and Response – 412.687.2243

 

Prepares the county to respond to public health emergencies, works with government and private organizations on emergency contingency plans, and strives to enable the County to quickly recover from an emergency.

Opioids and Overdose Prevention – 412.687.2243

 

Deaths from heroin and prescription opioids have increased significantly in recent years. Substance abuse affects one in every four families here. The Health Department is working with government and community partners to address this epidemic head-on. We provide information about opioid addiction, treatment options, and overdose prevention for residents, pharmacies, first responders, and healthcare professionals.

Lead is a neurotoxin commonly found in our daily lives. Over the last several decades, the United States has taken many steps to reduce the sources of lead exposure in our environment. Lead exposure is preventable, and lead-free children and lead-safe homes are possible. The Allegheny County Health Department offers many resources to help make your home lead-safe.

Our annual cohort of Health Corps members works with a variety of underserved populations in the county. In collaboration with partners from community agencies, Health Corps members provide a variety of direct services, including health literacy and outreach to some of our hardest-to-reach populations.

This program promotes and educates community members of all ages about safe use of all modes of transportation including: driving, bicycling, walking, and utilizing public transit.

The Office of Violence Prevention partners with community stakeholders to investigate and understand the causes and consequences of gun violence. The office is committed to preventing gun violence from occurring—through primary prevention programs, policy interventions, and advocacy.
