As a thought leader in public health and human service initiatives, the Foundation’s greatest success is uniting regional, national and global organizations with like missions to raise awareness and stimulate long-term and systemic change.
The Highmark Foundation serves the diverse communities served by Highmark Inc., its subsidiaries and affiliates. In addition, we serve the needs of individuals who live in more rural areas throughout these two states, where health care access and human services are limited or, sometimes, nonexistent.

United Way of Allegheny County is a change agent and efficient community fundraiser that improves lives by addressing critical community needs. By convening diverse partners and investing in programs and people to advance solutions, United Way creates long-lasting change and helps children and youth succeed, strengthens and supports families by promoting financial stability, ensures the safety and well-being of vulnerable seniors, assists people with disabilities, and provides information and referral sources meeting basic needs for residents of Southwestern Pennsylvania.

UPMC Health Plan, the second-largest health insurer in western Pennsylvania, is owned by UPMC, an integrated global health enterprise. The integrated partner companies of the UPMC Insurance Services Division – which includes UPMC Health Plan, UPMC WorkPartners, LifeSolutions (EAP), UPMC for You (Medical Assistance), and Community Care Behavioral Health – offer a full range of group health insurance, Medicare, Special Needs, CHIP, Medical Assistance, behavioral health, employee assistance, and workers’ compensation products and services to nearly 2.3 million members. Sustainable Pittsburgh was established in 1998 as part of the Pittsburgh Technology Council with financial backing from The Heinz Endowments. SP was an outcome of the Pittsburgh visit of the President’s Council on Sustainable Development (September 1998) whereby a committee of civic leaders organized several days of community visioning around introducing concepts of sustainability to the region. SP was initially organized with an Advisory Board (first meeting February 7, 2000) to guide strategic focus on primary program areas of: Smart Growth, Diversity & Civic Engagement, Amenities & Lifestyle, Transportation for Livable Communities, and Sustainable Business and Community Solutions.
