A Letter From Our Director
Hello Live Well Allegheny community,
I’m Dr. Debra Bogen, the new director of the Allegheny County Health Department. I’m excited to learn more about the Live Well Allegheny program and work with everyone involved.
I started at the Health Department in March as the first cases of coronavirus were reported in the county. I am so proud of everyone’s hard work to slow the spread of COVID-19. Everything we’ve done, from staying home to wearing a mask when we do go out, has helped save lives.
As Allegheny County takes steps to gradually reopen, it is important we keep practicing physical distancing. Many of you have heard the phrase social distancing, but at the Health Department, we prefer to say physical distancing. We are asking that people stay at least 6 feet apart physically from one another but continue to interact socially. We are social by nature, and during these stressful times, being social is vital to our health.
So, although we want people to remain physically separated, we want people to remain socially connected to family, friends, and our communities. Now more than ever, we need to check in on our loved ones over the phone or through a video chat, organize virtual get-togethers with our friends and family, and find ways to safely stay connected.
We have focused a lot on people’s physical health during the coronavirus pandemic. However, our mental health is just as important. Spending time outdoors, going for walks, stepping away from social media or the news, staying connected to the people we love and taking time for ourselves are great ways to take care of our mental health while looking out for our physical health.
And don’t be afraid to ask for help. There are many resources available. Some are listed under “Information for Residents” on the Health Department’s COVID-19 website at www.alleghenycounty.us/coronavirus or are available by calling the Health Department’s COVID-19 Hotline at 1-888-856-2774.
What we’re doing right now isn’t easy, but we are doing great work. Keep it up.
Stay safe,

Events & Funding Opportunities
Farmers Markets
“Farmers’ Markets are essential sources of nutritious fresh fruits and vegetables and a great way to support our local farmers. I look forward to them every year,” said Director Debra Bogen.
“This guidance is meant to keep vendors and shoppers safe. It is important to remember that Farmers’ Markets are an opportunity to secure food for your families, not a place to socialize. Physical distancing and limiting contact with others is the best way to slow the spread of COVID-19.”
